TEACHING AND LEARNING
Teaching, learning, and the classroom have experienced rapid and dynamic change over the past few years. The world is a different place, and our technologies have advanced at a rate that would have been unbelievable to me when I was growing up. I am passionate about a new vision for the classroom that will change our definitions of teaching, learning, and being educated in the 21st century. I promote the trialling and application of new teaching and learning techniques using Web 2.0 and other technologies, to support relevant learning that is engaging and motivating for students.
I believe in the philosophy of life long learning and in teaching students to teach themselves as they grow their knowledge, their understanding, and their skills.

INVOLVEMENT AND SUPPORT IN THE FOLLOWING INITIATIVES:
GILLEN PRIMARY - As the ICT Teacher I created and developed of a WIKI as a Learning Portal to facilitate the development of ICT skills across the school from Prep to Year 6. The WIKI served as a teaching portal, a teacher resource for all class teachers and a safe online
environment for children to explore and engage with at school and at home. This online learning environment also provided the opportunity to develop individual learning areas for children with specific learning needs and it supported a differentiated learning programme. WIKI
KiTES - Working with and supporting Jenny Buckley with the development of a WIKI as a portal for Digital Learning Objects and a Virtual Classroom, catering for a wide range of age groups and abilities. Providing support in the use of Smartboard Interactive Whiteboards.
KiTES is a highly mobile student inclusion unit in Alice Springs. The Unit has been officially named KiTES- ‘Kids in Town Engaged in School’ and began operation at Sadadeen Primary School mid-way through term one 2012. The program is designed to assist very remote families for a period of up to 3 weeks, giving students between the ages of 5-12 the opportunity to participate in their home school teachings while they are visiting Alice Springs.Whilst away from school, students currently share their learning via wiki sites. In the near future, the program will be more interactive through the use of technology, with students being able to speak, see, and interact directly with their school and classmates whilst they are away. WIKI
GATEWAY PROGRAMME - Working with and supporting Marylyn Pett with the development of a WIKI as an online learning portal for
secondary student which supports collaboration, communication and access to learning anytime. The GATEWAY programme at
Centralian Senior Secondary College provides a personal, pastoral approach. Teaching and learning takes place in a more relaxed environment with extra support available. WIKI

My philosophy of teaching and learning is best summed up briefly by the following: Education encompasses values, ethics and moral judgements, establishing meaningful relationships, developing knowledge and skills, experimenting with different learning styles, solving problems and developing creativity and thinking, reflecting on ones own learning, developing resilience, learning how to make good choices, having the opportunity to lead and develop responsibility and learning to know what to do when you don’t know all the answers.
I believe that all students, irrespective of race, colour, social status or home circumstances have the right to learn in an enriching, creative, supportive, caring and safe environment.
I also believe in creating a learning environment where students respect and co-operate with their peers and encourage and recognize their successes, an environment where students are encouraged to be independent, empowered learners, and where they feel safe enough and are encouraged to take risks. I believe that the learning environment should provide the support for all students allowing them to develop intellectually, aesthetically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
In such an environment, students must be encouraged to be aware of their own cultural heritage, their personal identity, the community and citizenship, as this contributes significantly to a child’s learning and personal development.
I believe that learning contexts need to be relevant, authentic and enterprising, incorporating networking, collaboration, connectedness, relevant technologies and the 21st century skills of digital literacy, inventive thinking, effective communication and high productivity.
In their learning, students must be engaged and experience raised levels of achievement and success.
Teaching requires knowing the students that you teach, flexibility, the ability to embrace change, mentoring, care and compassion. It also requires passion.

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” - Alvin Toffler

Just returned from four interesting days at Learning@School 2008 in Rotorua where I presented two workshops on e-portfolios with colleagues from my school.
Based on some research that I carried out with a few students at the end of last year, we shared some ideas and discussion and conversations around the issue of "why e-portfolios?", paper vs. electronic portfolios and using a learning management system and/or free Web 2.0 tools to establish e-portfolios.
The website with our notes, examples and links can be found at:

Feel free to view this website and I hope that you find it useful.
